One feature that comes standard on more and more Ford vehicles is the MyKey system, but a lot of people still don’t know exactly what the MyKey system is. All of my keys are MyKey aren’t they?
This article will give you a good look at what the MyKey system can do, and how you can use it at home or at work.

Overview of the MyKey System
The MyKey system allows you to program the keys of the vehicle so that they fall into one of two categories: MyKeys and Admin Keys. As the name sounds, Admin keys are the only ones able to program other keys, and also give you access to data about each individual MyKey.
You can program multiple individual MyKeys, each with their own settings. Here is a list of possible settings available to set for MyKeys:
- Maximum Speed Limiter of 80 MPH
- Speed Alert Chimes at 45 MPH, 55 MPH and 65 MPH
- Persistent BeltMinder with Audio Mute
- When this is turned on, until seat belts are buckled, there will be a persistent chime and the audio volume of the radio will be muted.
- Early Low-Fuel Warning (75 miles to empty, rather than the standard 50 Miles to empty)
- Features like Reverse Sensing, Cross-Traffic Alerts, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Traction Control Systems cannot be disabled while a MyKey is in the ignition.
- Limits for Audio Volume can be set as low as 44% of maximum volume.
In addition, the mileage driven for each individual MyKey is tracked, and Admin keys are able to view the data.
MyKey for Teen Drivers
MyKey was designed with teen drivers in mind. According to data from a Harris Survey from 2011, “67 percent of teens polled said they wouldn’t want MyKey features. However, if using MyKey would lead to greater driving privileges, only 36 percent would object to the technology.”
The advantages are obvious: You can ensure that your teen does not exceed 80 miles per hour; you can guarantee that they will wear their seat belts; you can know that they will not have their audio volume up so loud that they could damage their hearing; and you can easily track how many miles they have driven.
Because you can program multiple MyKeys, each teen driver can have their own personal MyKey. This was, if one of your teens has more experience driving, they can have looser restrictions, while the other teen driver with less experience can have more restrictions.
The MyKey system allows you to give your teens the freedom they crave, and the ability to learn to drive on their own, while making sure that they are staying safe.
MyKey for Businesses
MyKey is not limited to use by teen drivers. MyKey also has uses in a company car or fleet vehicle. Managers can keep the Admin keys, while all driver employees can be issued their own personal MyKey.
Because the mileage of each MyKey is tracked individually, it is possible to very easily confirm mileage logs for each employee. In addition, you can be sure to maintain a good company image when your employees are on the road by limiting their maximum speed and audio volume. There’s nothing more embarrassing than getting phone calls from disgruntled fellow drivers who saw your company’s logo on a car going 90 miles per hour with the stereo so loud it drowns out jet airplanes.
MyKey for Guest Drivers
If you frequently (or infrequently) allow friends or guests to drive your vehicle, you can use the MyKey system to ensure that they are using your vehicle in a manner that you approve of, by programming speed limiters, audio limiters, persistent Beltminder chimes, and early low fuel warnings.
If you employ the use of valet parking at hotels or restaurants, you can simply give them a MyKey to be able to check on mileage of the vehicle after the fact. I have the utmost respect for those in the hospitality industry, and I know that there are few jobs more stressful than that of valet driver at a high-class hotel, restaurant, or resort, but there are sometimes some bad apples thrown into the mix, and with MyKey, you can have the security of knowing that your vehicle was well taken care of in its time away from you.
